BAGDEPARIS — Materials & Know-how
From smooth leather to velvety suede, every type of leather possesses its own character, texture, and way of aging. At BAGDEPARIS, we choose our leathers based on a simple idea: a beautiful material should be as pleasant to experience as it is to look at.

Leather is one of the oldest materials used in accessory design. Yet, behind the word "leather" lie very different materials: some are smooth and structured, others supple and naturally grained, while suede reveals a soft, velvety texture.
To understand why two leather bags can have a completely different appearance, feel, and evolution, one must begin by understanding the material itself.
At BAGDEPARIS, we favor genuine leather and various natural finishes, including cowhide, suede, and, on certain models, patent leather.
"Beautiful leather does not try to look perfect. It reveals its character over time."

What distinguishes the different types of leather?
Not all hides have the same characteristics. The part of the hide used, the way it is processed, its grain, and its finish directly influence its appearance and feel.
This is why two pieces, both carrying the "genuine leather" label, can feel very different in your hands.
It is also important to distinguish the type of leather from its finish. A leather can be natural, smooth, grained, suede, or patent depending on how its surface has been treated.
1. Full-grain leather
A natural surface and a character that evolves
Full-grain leather retains the natural outer surface of the hide. Its grain and natural variations remain visible, giving it a particularly authentic appearance.
Over time, it can develop a patina all its own. Small grain variations, natural marks, and color evolution are part of its character.
It is a leather appreciated for its authenticity and its ability to become even more personal over the years.
Good to know: "Genuine leather" does not automatically mean "full-grain leather." These are two different indications, and it is better to check the precise composition of a product before assigning it that designation.
2. Corrected-grain leather or embossed leather
A more uniform surface
Some leathers are slightly treated on the surface to obtain a more regular appearance. The result can be a more homogeneous material, particularly suited to structured and contemporary silhouettes.
This type of finish also allows for the creation of different visual expressions: subtle grain, a more uniform surface, or a more pronounced look.
3. Genuine leather
A natural material, but not a grade indication
"Genuine leather" indicates that it is indeed a material derived from animal hide. However, this expression alone does not specify the exact level of quality, the part of the hide used, or the type of finish.
At BAGDEPARIS, several models are specifically described as being crafted in 100% genuine leather, with different characteristics depending on their finish and use.
For example, some BAGDEPARIS accessories are made of genuine leather with a natural finish, while other models use suede or a patent finish.
4. Suede leather
An immediately recognizable material
Suede is distinguished by its soft touch and velvety surface. Its texture absorbs light differently than smooth leather, giving colors a particularly elegant depth.
It is a material that immediately brings a suppler and more relaxed feel to a silhouette.
At BAGDEPARIS, suede occupies an important place in certain collections. The Nova Medium Suede Tote , for example, is crafted from 100% suede cowhide, with a soft, matte finish.
The collection also includes models in suede calfskin, such as the Essia Mini Suede Tote .
5. Cowhide leather: a versatile material
A choice naturally suited for everyday bags
Cowhide is particularly appreciated in leather goods for its versatility and resistance. Depending on how it is worked, it can take on very different appearances.
It can be smooth, grained, suede, or receive a specific finish. Therefore, it is less of a unique aesthetic than a family of leathers that can meet many needs.
At BAGDEPARIS, cowhide is notably used in several suede models, including the Nova and the Nayla. The Nayla Large Suede Tote is described as being made from 100% genuine cowhide with a suede finish.
6. Calfskin leather: finesse and softness
A particularly delicate texture
Calfskin is generally appreciated for its fine feel and delicate texture. Its surface can offer a particularly soft and refined sensation when worked in a suede finish.
At BAGDEPARIS, suede calfskin is notably used for certain more compact and lightweight silhouettes.
The Essia Mini Suede Tote thus uses an exterior of 100% genuine suede calfskin, with a soft and velvety finish.
7. Patent leather
A finish that attracts light
Patent leather is immediately recognizable by its shiny surface. It offers a more graphic and contemporary expression than matte or natural finishes.
At BAGDEPARIS, this finish is notably used on certain backpacks. The Omega Large Backpack uses a natural leather with a shiny and resistant patent finish.
Its maintenance also differs from suede: a patent surface should be cleaned delicately with a soft cloth, while suede requires a suitable brush and specific protection.
Which leather does BAGDEPARIS choose?
There is no single BAGDEPARIS leather. The choice of material depends on the silhouette, the usage, and the desired aesthetic.
Why the choice of leather is important
A bag is not just a shape. The material influences its feel, its visual weight, its suppleness, its resistance, and even the way it will evolve over time.
Suede brings softness and a tactile dimension. Natural leather can gradually reveal a patina. A patent finish creates a brighter presence. Each choice tells a different story.
It is this relationship between material, function, and aesthetics that interests us at BAGDEPARIS.
Leather is also recognized by its imperfections
A natural material is never perfectly identical from one piece to the next. Slight differences in grain, texture, color, or feel may appear.
Far from being a defect, these variations are an essential part of what makes genuine leather alive.
This is also why two bags from the same model may present small differences. The material has its own history before the bag even begins its own.
How to care for your leather?
The best care always depends on the leather's finish.
For smooth or natural leather, a soft, dry cloth generally allows for delicate dust removal. Avoid prolonged exposure to water, direct heat, and harsh chemicals.
For suede, use a brush specifically designed for this material and, if necessary, a protective spray suitable for suede. Avoid saturating the surface with water or products not designed for suede.
For patent models, a soft cloth helps preserve the shiny surface. The bag should then be stored in its dust bag, away from humidity and direct light.
The goal is not to keep a bag frozen in its original state. It is to allow it to age with elegance.
"The beauty of leather appears as much in its material as in the way it evolves over time."

Discover Paris EssentialsTrue luxury is in the material
Trends change. Silhouettes evolve. But a beautiful material retains a special presence.
This is why the choice of leather deserves as much attention as the bag's design itself. It determines what you feel at first contact, how the bag accompanies your daily life, and, above all, how it will evolve over time.
At BAGDEPARIS, we believe that elegance should not be complicated. A beautiful silhouette, a carefully chosen material, and details thought out for real life can be enough.
Because true chic often begins with a beautiful material.
